Having got up early this morning to go to London's hub of Jewish activity - Golders Green, I came away feeling rather disappointed.
Yes, I bought some useful items of food that you can't get in most non-Jewish areas like Osem mini croutons and fishballs, but what I actually went out for (and as requested by my wife) could not be found - honey cake mix.
Despite going into five shops including Kosher Kingdom (billed as Europe's largest kosher supermarket), Yarden and Kay's, there was no honey cake mix to be found.
Around Passover you can always get a Manischewitz or Snowcrest honey cake mix where you just add an egg and margarine and hey presto, you have you own honey cake ready to bake.
In years gone by, honey cake mix could be found on the shelfs for New Year, but this year, there wasn't one place selling it.
It's not like the retailers do not make money out of them. A mix costs around £3 compared to £1.50 for a ready made cake. Plus with a mix they have the potential to also make more money by selling a customer some eggs and margarine to go with it.
So why are we limited to just ready made cakes for Rosh Hashanah?
And no, please do not suggest that my wife makes a honey cake from scratch. It's possible, but when there are mixes already available, we should be able to buy them.

What's the point of buying the Honey Cake Mix when you can simply buy the ready made and delicious Honey Cake for less than the price of the mix! The shopkeepers probably had too much stock left over last year and decided that everyone like us was buying the honey cake. Shanah Tovah Leslie!
